The Geomancy Chart and the 16 Houses

The geomancy (Raml) chart consists of sixteen houses. The answer to any question is derived solely with the help of these sixteen houses. First, observe the layout of the geomancy chart.

Out of the sixteen houses of the geomancy chart, four houses are assigned to each element:

  • Houses 1, 5, 9, and 13 are Fiery, and they are external.

  • Houses 2, 6, 10, and 14 are Airy, and they are mutable.

  • Houses 3, 7, 11, and 15 are Watery, and they are internal.

  • Houses 4, 8, 12, and 16 are Earthy, and they are fixed.

The first four houses of the geomancy chart are called Mothers (Ummahāt).
Houses 5, 6, 7, and 8 are called Daughters (Banāt).
Houses 9, 10, 11, and 12 are called Granddaughters (Mutawallidāt).
Houses 13, 14, 15, and 16 are called Witnesses (Zawā’idāt).

  • Fiery houses are external and masculine.

  • Airy houses are mutable and masculine.

  • Watery houses are internal and feminine.

  • Earthy houses are fixed and feminine.

The auspicious houses are 1, 4, 5, 10, 11, and 13.
The inauspicious houses are 3, 6, 8, and 12.
Houses 2, 7, 9, 14, 15, and 16 are neither auspicious nor inauspicious.

Attributions of the Houses

House No. 1
This house is called Bait al-Tāale‘ (House of the Ascendant). It is associated with the self, body, soul, health and well-being, willpower, movement and rest, life and death, sorrow and happiness, progress and decline. From this house, the fortune or misfortune of the querent’s ascendant is determined.

House No. 2
This house is called Bait al-Maāl (House of Wealth). It is associated with livelihood, food, wealth and means of earning, income and expenditure, medicine for the sick, the absent, buying and selling, profit and loss, and the giving and taking of loans, etc.

House No. 3
This house is called Bait al-Aqārib (House of Relatives). It is associated with brothers and sisters, relatives, movement and travel, migration, interpretation of dreams seen during the day, short journeys, transfers of government employees, and harmony or discord with siblings.

House No. 4
This is Bait al-Arḍ (House of the Land). It is associated with home, house, mansion, shop, current residence, buying and selling of land and property, fortune or misfortune of the house, the father’s ascendant, and the lifespan of the querent.

House No. 5
This house is called Bait al-Awlād (House of Children). It relates to children, the beloved, love and affection, pregnancy, news, letters, and circumstances, etc.

House No. 6
This house is called Bait al-Amraāḍ (House of Illnesses). It is associated with magic and sorcery, disease, diagnosis of spiritual and physical illnesses, thieves, lost items, hidden secrets, etc.

House No. 7
This house is called Bait al-Nisā’ (House of Women). It is associated with marriage and wedlock, theft cases, the place of the missing person, hidden conditions, the state of opponents, and the condition of the spouse, etc.

House No. 8
This house is called Bait al-Khawf (House of Fear). It is associated with unseen wealth, dangers and death, circumstances of dying, illness, murder and bloodshed, looting and plunder, a woman’s wealth, fights and disputes, etc.

House No. 9
This house is called Bait al-Safar (House of Travel). It is associated with long-distance journeys, inspiration, interpretation of dreams seen at night, the condition of the traveler, charity and almsgiving, Hajj and pilgrimage, asceticism and piety, worship, and the presence of spirits, jinn, and supernatural beings, etc.

House No. 10
This house is called Bait al-Rizq (House of Sustenance). It is associated with honor, rank, and status; seeking employment; medical treatment; prevention of illness; and the condition of a spiritual guide or mentor, etc.

House No. 11
This house is called Bait al-Umeed (House of Hope). It is associated with hope, old friends, construction of buildings, zakat, talismans or diagrams, and the results of spiritual practices, etc.

House No. 12
This house is called Bait al-Aa‘dā’ (House of Enemies). It is associated with enemies, the jealous, creditors, the condition of prisoners, the condition of livestock, prison conditions, release and hardship of prisoners, women’s illnesses, and circumstances of reconciliation or agreement with enemies, etc.

House No. 13
This house is called Bait al-Sa‘y (House of Effort). It is associated with effort and planning, the seeker’s pursuit, conditions of a child’s journey, and the inner state of the enemy. This house holds the primary authority and serves as a witness to the first, fifth, and ninth houses, which are fiery houses.

House No. 14
This house is called Bait al-Maṭlūb (House of the Desired). It relates to matters concerning another person’s self and whatever is asked about from the querent; all kinds of negotiations and conversations; all kinds of unseen news and the causes of hidden affairs; and the hardships and difficulties of travel. It is witnessed by the second, sixth, and tenth houses, which are airy houses.

House No. 15
This house is called Bait al-Qāḍī (House of the Judge), also known as Mīzān al-Raml (The Scale of Geomancy). If the question is whether to file a lawsuit or not, or whether to seek counsel or not, judgment is taken from this house. It is a witness to the third, seventh, and eleventh houses, and it is a watery house.

House No. 16
This house is called Bait al-Anjām (House of the Outcome), also known as Bait al-‘Āqibat (House of the End Result). It relates to the completion and final outcome of all matters—whether a task should be done or not, or what is best in one’s favor—as well as profit and loss in every affair. This house is a witness to the fourth, eighth, and twelfth houses, and it is an earthy house.

To answer any single question, sometimes we have to examine one house, and at other times several houses. From a single house, answers to multiple questions can be derived. Our entire life is surrounded by different questions, and in every case, we inevitably have to obtain their answers.
