Some specific methods for this are found in books, which anyone can read and learn. However, we are often asked what the authentic method is. In this regard, there are two methods that should be employed.
First Method:
This method is specifically associated with the casting of lots (qur‘ah), and for this purpose the lot must be genuine. Nowadays, people make a lot out of any metal and begin practicing geomancy, which is incorrect. Only when the lot is authentic does a correct answer emerge. In this connection, our article “Geomantic Dice (Qur‘a-e-Raml” should be studied, in which all aspects of this matter have been explained in detail.
Second Method:
The second method is related to numbers. That is, the inquirer provides any four numbers from 1 to 96. These numbers are then examined, and any number greater than 16 is divided by 16, and the remainder obtained must be a number that does not exceed 16. In this way, from the four numbers, the first four figures are arranged, and the rest of the chart is completed.
The Method of Multiplication
Always remember this formula: the figures of geomancy are a combination of dots and lines. A dot, which is called fard (odd), and a line, which is called zawj (even), form its very foundation.
-
When a dot is multiplied by a dot, a line is produced.
-
When a dot is multiplied by a line, a dot is produced.
-
And when a line is multiplied by a line, a line is produced.
For example, observe these figures.

For the formation of the chart, we are writing the complete method through the use of the lot. This should be understood carefully.
Suppose that the following four figures appear in the lot.

In the geomancy (ʿIlm al-Raml) chart there are 16 houses, and the entire remaining chart is formed through the multiplication of the figures present in the first four houses.
Now the chart is constructed in such a way that these four obtained figures are placed, in order, into houses number 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the chart.

Next, keeping these four figures in view, we must create the next four figures, which will occupy houses number 5, 6, 7, and 8. By taking the fire rank (Martabah-e-Ātish) of the first four figures, the fifth figure is produced.

Then, by taking the air rank (Martabah-e-Bād), the sixth figure is arranged. After that, from the water rank (Martabah-e-Āb) the seventh figure comes into being, and in the same way, from the earth rank (Martabah-e-Khāk) the eighth figure is formed. In this manner, these eight figures are completed.

Now comes the stage of forming the ninth and tenth figures.
To form the ninth figure, the first and second figures are multiplied, and from this multiplication the ninth figure is produced. Observe how this is done.

Thus, our ninth figure, Nasrat-ul-Dākhil, is obtained. Now, by multiplying the third and fourth figures, we form our tenth figure.

In this way, our tenth figure, Qabz-ul-Khārij, has been obtained.
The eleventh figure will be formed by multiplying figure number 5 and figure number 6,
and the twelfth figure will be obtained from the multiplication of the seventh and eighth figures.
As before, for the thirteenth figure, the ninth and tenth figures are multiplied, and for the fourteenth figure, the multiplication of the eleventh and twelfth figures yields the result.
Then, by multiplying the thirteenth and fourteenth figures, the Balance figure (Shakl-e-Mīzān), that is, the fifteenth figure, is produced.
Finally, by multiplying the fifteenth figure with the first figure, our sixteenth and last figure comes into existence.
In this way, the complete form of the geomancy chart appears before us.

You have seen that this entire process revolves around multiplication.
In the laws governing the figures (Ahkām-e-Shakliyah), multiplication plays a central and crucial role.
This is not an easy stage. Readers should understand that in constructing a single chart and deriving an answer to a question from it, numerous laws and principles are applied, and only then is a correct decision reached. It is indeed a difficult science, but for one whom Allah grants understanding, the paths become smooth and accessible.
