You must often have seen brass geomantic lots with geomancer (رمال). They consist of
pieces attached to an iron wire. The geomancers (رمال) rotates it in the hand and then drops it onto a book, a plate, or a board. Since all four pieces are square, whichever side they fall on, they produce the first four geomantic figures. In other words, whichever side the lot lands on creates a particular figure, and that figure becomes the answer to your question. If you look closely at these square metal pieces, you will see round dots on them—there is nothing on them except dots. However, these dots are of two kinds: in one place there is a single dot, and in another place there are two dots placed side by side. Where there is only one dot, a dot is marked, and where there are two equal dots, a line is drawn. The dot is written like this (.) and the line like this (..).
In the terminology of scholars, a single dot is called fard (odd) and two dots are called zauj (even). Whichever side the lot falls on, the resulting figure is written down. Since there are four pieces, one figure comes from each piece, and in this way the first four figures appear. These first four figures are called the Mothers (Ummahaat).
However, this lot is made by combining seven metals at a specific time. The lots that are commonly available for sale in the market are not reliable. According to scholars, only a lot that has been made strictly according to the prescribed rules gives correct answers. A lot that has not been formed according to principles and regulations does not give correct results.
The method of making the lot is as follows: it is made by combining seven metals, which are:
1-Gold 2–Silver 3–Copper
4–Iron 5–Lead 6–Tin 7–Mercury
Then it is completed during the hours of the seven planets: purchasing the metals in the hour of Jupiter; gathering them together in the hour of Saturn; melting them in the hour of Mars; polishing them in the hour of the Moon; casting them in the hour of the Sun; engraving them in the hour of Mercury; and drilling holes and stringing them on a wire in the hour of Venus.
Only then is it called a genuine lot, and, by Allah’s permission, it gives correct answers. Likewise, the fortune-teller should know the precautions for the lot, the proper way to store it, and the method of keeping it before and after use. However, this is an expensive pursuit, and for a geomancers (رمال), having such a genuine lot made is not a difficult matter.
